Geeky & Genki Gamecast Episode 17: Usenet and the Birth of Pretentious Gaming Jargon

Geeky & Genki Gamecast Episode 17: Usenet and the Birth of Pretentious Gaming Jargon

Hey everybody! This episode marks the beginning of an occasional series I’ve been wanting to do for a while, exploring different facets of RPG theory that were first promulgated on the usenet newsgroup rec.games.frp.advocacy back in the mid-90s.   I first stumbled across rec.games.frp.advocacy (henceforth referred to as RGFA) sometime in 1995, and spent a few years very invested in reading and posting there. RGFA profoundly changed and enriched the way I play and run RPGs. The ideas that were discussed on RGFA back then constitute a sort of half-forgotten pre-history to Forge theory, and given the awkwardness of digging through the Google groups archives of the old newsgroup, getting a good understanding of those ideas can be difficult.  My intention for this series is to make some of those ideas and history more accessible, and hopefully to spark some new, constructive discussion of those ideas. If it stirs some of the amazing people who were active on RGFA back then, it will be an added, wonderful bonus. Show Notes We talk a bit about the history and significance of rec.games.frp.advocacy, and the nature of discussion on Usenet Diced vs diceless gaming and the magic of David Berkman We talk about the differences in tone between RGFA and Forge theory “System doesn’t matter” Theory as taxonomy vs theory as proscriptive guidance RGFA stances vs Forge stances We discuss Immersion RGFA’s threefold model vs the Forge’s big model Forge simulationism vs RGFA simulationism Near the end, we shift into a discussion of Forge techniques that can be useful in any style of game.
